College launches career portal
Bard College at Simon’s Rock recently launched the College Central Network (CCN), a career services portal where students and alumni connect with each other and with potential employers.
CCN complements and expands the Win Commons career center with a whole host of online services and tools, including a job board where Simon’s Rock friendly employers (including alumni!) post jobs and internships, and perhaps most anticipated, a career mentoring network.
“Over the last year as I traveled the country, the topic alumni raised most often was career services,” said Rich Montone, Annual Fund and Alumni Affairs Manager. “Experienced, established alumni wanted to know how they could help students and other alumni. Newer alumni and those exploring careers were eager to connect with alumni with expertise in their fields.”
Now, alumni can register on the portal and also sign up as mentors. Mentors indicate the services they can offer, such as:
- resume reviews
- career coaching
- interview advice and techniques
- graduate school guidance
Then, students and alumni looking for advice can find a mentor in a number of ways. They can find help by searching for their field of expertise, the services they provide, or by location, to connect directly with a Simon’s Rock mentor.
Exploring life outside Simon’s Rock
Before the portal launched, Career Services pre-registered every single student. All students need to do is login, update their profiles, and begin exploring the services available.
“All students should update their accounts,” explained Sue Lyon, Associate Dean of the College. “Employers don’t just post jobs on CCN, they also search for talent.”
Lyon continued, “It’s not just for upper-college students. First-years can begin learning about career paths and thinking about life after Simon’s Rock.”
In addition to Simon’s Rock specific postings, the national job board has more than a half million jobs – from tens of thousands of unique sources, comprising all of the major job boards as well as newspapers, associations, and company Web sites.
To help students and alumni prepare for internships or job hunts, CCN has a library of articles, videos, podcasts full of tips and advice. From Accounting, Biology, and Business, to the Arts, Dance, and Healthcare, CCN has tools and templates that make it easy to build industry specific resumes and portfolios.
Career Services encourages all students and alumni to register on College Central Network. Taking the time to register and complete a profile puts Rockers in touch with people who want to help each other.
