Pianist in The War and other Ken Burns documentaries to perform in free concert on October 27
GREAT BARRINGTON, MA – The Music Program and the Office of the Provost of Bard College at Simon’s Rock will co-sponsor a special concert on October 27. Jacqueline Schwab, pianist for the Ken Burns documentaries, will perform in the McConnell Theater at 8 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.
Ms. Schwab is a renowned folk and classical improvisational pianist who has performed in various media. Her signature style crosses over musical genres and her work can be inspired by traditional folk songs of England, Scotland, Ireland and America, as well as by blues or vintage tango, by Bach, Satie and Bartok. She gives solo concerts of traditional English and Scottish works, and has performed with numerous folk musicians, among them: Scottish fiddler Laura Risk; singer Jean Redpath (on A Prairie Home Companion); fiddler Alasdair Fraser; cellist Abby Newton; glass harmonica player Dean Shostak; fiddler Andrea Hoag; singer-songwriter Dillon Bustin; and singer Jeanne Morrill.
Her classical training came from the unique Third Stream program at New England Conservatory of Music, in which she was encouraged to meld different musical traditions into a personal style. She received her Bachelor of Music degree with honors.
One of her achievements is her collaboration with filmmaker Ken Burns. Mr. Burns praised her playing as “insistent, physical, heartfelt and… unusually moving,” and she is in multiple soundtracks of Burns’ productions, including the Grammy award-winning Civil War, as well as recently, The War. She also played on the Emmy Award-winning recording of Baseball. For more information, call 413-528-7212
