Nathan Englander is a guest in the Poetry and Fiction Series at Bard College at Simon's Rock

GREAT BARRINGTON, MA –- Nathan Englander will be the next guest in the Simon’s Rock Poetry and Fiction Series.  He will read from his new novel, The Ministry of Special Cases, on Thursday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m.  The reading, free and open to the public, will be held in Blodgett House.

Released in April of this year, The Ministry of Special Cases, is set in 1976 Buenos Aires during Argentina's "Dirty War," during which  30,000 students, union members and political opponents were “disappeared” by the military government.

“The fate of Argentina’s Jews during the 1976-83 “Dirty War” is depicted with blistering emotional intensity in this stark first novel,” according to Kirkus Reviews.  “Englander’s story collection promised a brilliant future, and that promise is here fulfilled beyond all expectations.”

Prior to The Ministry of Special Cases, Englander wrote For the Relief of Unbearable Urges, a collection of stories. That collection was translated into more than a dozen languages and was awarded the 2000 Pen/Malamud Award.

His work has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, including The Atlantic, The New Yorker, and The Best American Short Stories.
