Italia: Windows on an Ancient World, photographs of Arthur Hillman, opens at Simon's Rock

GT. BARRINGTON, MA – An exhibition of the photographs and artist’s books of Arthur Hillman will take place in the Gallery at Liebowitz at Bard College at Simon’s Rock.  “Italia: Windows on an Ancient World” will open on April 6; the opening reception will take place on April 12, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Hillman’s Italian photographs include architectural elements and contemporary landscapes. He began this body of work in 2002.

In putting together this exhibition, his goal was to explore the interaction of space and form.  “I want to maintain the integrity of the location, while stressing the structural and formal aspects of the scene,” he said. “The idea of focusing on the ruins of an architecture and world that was established nearly two thousand years ago presents an interesting and challenging vehicle for a contemporary photographer.”  His photographs include aspects of places such as the Roman Forum and the Baths of Caracalla.

In some of this work, he explores the idea of a visual "window" or aperture as a design element that allows the viewer to focus on a particular fragment or component of an overall composition.
