Jared Handelsman to exhibit his photograms and films at Simon’s Rock
Great Barrington, MA – Jared Handelsman’s large landscape photograms and shadowfilms will be on exhibit at Simon’s Rock from February 1 through March 28. He will talk about his work at a public reception on February 20 at 5:30. The exhibit and the talk will be held in the Gallery at Liebowitz, which is at the corner of Alford and Hurlburt Roads in Gt. Barrington.
Handelsman’s photograms are made outside at night with paper exposed to light that comes from the moon, a flashlight or headlights. The resulting photogram is a glimpse of the natural world in which the paper is placed.
About his shadowfilms Handelsman says, “Sunrays pass through the forest in such a way that they enter my window and cast a shadow play on the wall. I set up a video camera and capture the images as they shift across the room. It’s a phenomenon that I noticed while working on my landscape photograms and the images in these shadowfilms are like positive, animated versions of my paper negatives.” The audio for his films is the ambient sound as recorded by the video camera.
Handelsman, who lives in Catskill, N.Y., has exhibited his photograms and films throughout the Northeast U.S., and in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. His professional experience and training include Yaddo and MacDowell residencies and fellowships.
