UNCOMMON WOMEN TO BE PRESENTED BY THE THEATER DEPARTMENT AT SIMON'S ROCK
GREAT BARRINGTON, MA — The Simon's Rock College Theater Department presents Uncommon Women and Others, a tribute to the recent passing of famed American playwright Wendy Wasserstein. Performances will take place on Thursday and Friday Nov. 9 & 10, at 7:30; and on Saturday Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the McConnell Theater of the Daniel Arts Center.
Written in 1977, Uncommon Women gives glimpses into the lives of six Mount Holyoke alumnae as they assess their recent journey from the halls of academia into a world filled with possibility and challenge. Set in 1978, the piece flashes back to follow the story of nine young women during their final semester in 1973. Written when Wasserstein was 22 years old, shortly after graduating from Mount Holyoke herself, Uncommon Women was Wasserstein's first substantial body of work.
"Seventies feminism found its most acclaimed dramatic voice in this first play by Wendy Wasserstein, which seems to be trading in stereotypes, but only because the kinds of characters it deals with -- collegiate feminists -- became such a commonplace and predictable stereotype of popular culture in the years that followed." (All Movie Guide)
Uncommon Women is the inaugural production of recently appointed theater faculty member and director Aimee Michele, featuring an ensemble of emerging student performers as well as the professional presence of Shakespeare and Company veteran actress, Barbara Simms.
