Simon's Rock's Honors Diversity with a Full Day of Programming and Workshops
Begun in 2005, Diversity Day is an annual event which brings the entire Bard College at Simon’s Rock campus together for frank, honest discussions of race, gender, and other controversial issues of identity and perception. With students hailing from 40 states and more than half a dozen nations, and faculty from across the globe, the demographic diversity of the Bard College at Simon’s Rock campus provides the perfect background for panels and group meetings. Academic classes are canceled on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 so that all members of the community are able to participate, and benefit from workshops that augment the ongoing diversity discussions in class and on campus. Sponsored and organized by the Race Task Force, students, faculty and staff were all invited to propose workshops, discussions, films or other events for the Diversity Day schedule.
Topics of discussion at last year’s Diversity Day included “Environmental Justice,” “Hip-Hop, Masculinity and Sexism,” “Embracing Difference: Exploring Disability, Diversity and Learning Perspectives,” and many other discussions, encompassing concepts of race, trust, gender, art, culture. The Race Task Force is currently organizing workshop and teach in proposals. For the complete schedule of Diversity Day 2008 events, visit the Newsroom and elsewhere on the Simon’s Rock web site next week.
