News from the Scientific Frontier: A Rocker Alum in the World of Particle Physics
When: Thu Mar 08 • 4:30 pm
Where: Clark Auditorium, Fisher Science and Academic Center
Matt Strassler, a Rocker from the early 80s, and a professor of theoretical particle physics and string theory, will give a talk intended for a general audience on Thursday, March 8th at 4:30 at the Clark Auditorium in Fisher. He'll speak about what it's like to be doing science in general and particle physics in particular in the era of the Large Hadron Collider, the giant new particle accelerator in Geneva, Switzerland. He will tell us something about the collider itself (it is a pretty amazing machine) and then about the famous 'Higgs' particle: why it matters to you, why physicists want to find it, and how they are trying to do so. (And if you ask nicely, he might tell you the real story behind those [not!]-faster-than-light neutrinos.) Matt hosts a blog and website intended for the public which you are invited to explore: it's called “Of Particular Significance”, http://profmattstrassler.com.
