An Evening of Japanese Culture: Japanese Ikebana (Flower Arrangement) in Context

Brian Mikesell, Director of the Alumni Library, will give a presentation on ikebana (Japanese flower arrangement) including a demonstration of several different styles, both traditional and modern, of Ikenobo ikebana. Mr. Mikesell is the president of New York Tachibana, a chapter of the Ikenobo school of ikebana, and has achieved the rank of Kakyo.

Paul Naamon, faculty in the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and in Asian Studies, will discuss ikebana as well as other aspects of decorative arts and aesthetics (such as calligraphy, tea ceremony, and poetry) in relation to temple life and the Japanese notion of spiritual attainment. Monshin Naamon is an ordained Buddhist monk, a designated lineage holder in Tendai Buddhism, and abbot of the Tendai Buddhist Institute.
