the next WITS speaker: Professor Lauren Rose, Professor of Mathematics at Bard College.
Where: Fisher Science Center, Clark Auditorium
When: Tuesday, April 27, 6:00 PM
Here is her description of the talk:
Graphs and Inscribable Polyhedra
"A polyhedron is a 3-dimensional object made up of polygons, for example a cube, pyramid, prism, or dodecahedron. A polyhedron is called inscribable if it can fit snugly inside a sphere, so that the vertices of the polyhedron lie on the sphere. The system of edges and vertices of the polyhedron form a mathematical object called a graph. In this case, you can flatten out the graph and view it as a 2-dimensional object in the plane.
In this talk, I will discuss work that I have done with Bard students and faculty to determine which graphs correspond to inscribable polyhedra and which do not.
This talk should be accessible to a general audience."
There will be snacks, there will be math, and there will be fun!
