Concert of new works by Simon's Rock composers

When:   Wed May 06 • 7:30 pm

Where:   Kellogg Music Center

A uniquely interesting musical event will take place Wednesday night at 7:30 pm in Kellogg Music Center: a program of new works created this semester by Simon's Rock students. This performance is organized around two group projects:

1. A series of song settings by each member of the composition class to the same text, the well-known "Silver Swan" originally set to music by the Elizabethan composer Orlando Gibbons. You will be fascinated to see how many ways a set of words can be put to music, and how many different meanings can be attached to them!

2. In addition, the Advanced Theory class has devoted its attention to a beautiful Bach chorale, which each member has rendered in a uniquely personal way as a single-line composition for a plethora of different instruments: clarinet, viola, trumpet, guitar, and violin.

These group projects offer a fascinating study in contrasts and similarities--it will be highly enlightening as well as entertaining for the audience. In addition, there will be original compositions for a variety of media, including saxophone and piano, and string quartet. The talented composers have been mentored this semester by Cheng-Cha Wu whose energy and expertise have ushered these works into existence. Please share the thrill of first hearings, and enjoy the role of patrons of music as you participate in the process of bringing new music to life.
