"Adventures in Persuading Charismatic Megafauna to Participate in Physiological Assessment Studies"

Monday December 8, 2008
7pm, Clark Auditorium

Studies aimed at understanding the physiological conditions and challenges faced by large, endangered wildlife species are constrained both by logistics and legal/ethical considerations.  Technology and creativity must be employed to overcome these obstacles and obtain tissue samples to perform health assessments or measure physiological processes in free-ranging whales.  We will discuss the types of studies that utilize minimally invasive sampling, and the range of data that can be acquired from small bits of superficial tissue, including personal accounts of hunting 30-ton whales with a cross-bow in a pathetically small vessel far from shore.

Everyone is invited
Expect delicious refreshments as usual
