Director of Quantitative Literacy
Bard College at Simon’s Rock invites applications for a Director of Quantitative Literacy. The Director is a member of the Win Commons, an academic resource center, and works closely with academic advisors and the Office of Academic Affairs in supporting students in quantitative subjects. The Director supervises peer and adult tutors in mathematics, the sciences, and quantitative social sciences. The Director is also a faculty member in the Division of Science, Mathematics, and Computing and teaches courses in mathematics as well as the Science Seminar, a general education course that integrates the interdisciplinary study of science and mathematics in fields of vital contemporary interest, e.g. climate science. The Director makes traditional faculty contributions to the institution, including research, curriculum development, and committee service. A Ph.D. in mathematics, science, or mathematics/science education is required. The successful candidate will possess exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and leadership skills; relevant work experience tutoring students in quantitative subjects; and the ability to develop innovative strategies for supporting students with math anxiety and learning disabilities and for teaching mathematics as an essential component of the liberal arts. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to take leadership in expanding the College’s quantitative literacy programs; to teach in and inform the curriculum of the Science Seminar and the mathematics program; and to participate in the expansion of the Win Commons.
Bard College at Simon’s Rock, located in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, is the nation’s only four-year residential college of the liberal arts and sciences specifically designed to provide bright, highly motivated students with the opportunity to begin college after the tenth or eleventh grade. Students who successfully complete the requirements receive the Associates of Arts (A.A.) degree after two years of study, and the Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree after four. The student population numbers 395, 85% of whom live on campus.
