In my classroom I like to combine looking, writing and discussion. Often we'll be looking at photographs together and we'll stop and write about what we're looking at, and then share our written responses. I find this takes the discussion to a deeper place, and moves the center away from me. In the quiet two minutes of looking and writing, students do amazing things, describing the world in the photograph, and probing the meanings and implications of what they see.
