Research:
Primarily 17th century French literature; secondarily, women writers, Renaissance French and Italian literature, popular culture, women's studies.
Dr. Tebben has recently focused on food history in her research, presenting papers on French food in its literary context. In 2006 she attended a symposium on food studies at the Université François-Rabelais in Tours, France sponsored by the European Institute for the History and Culture of Food. Recent publications in this area include “French Fries: France’s Culinary Identity from Brillat-Savarin to Barthes” in Convivium Artium and “French Food Images and National Identity: Consommé, Cheese Soufflé, Francité,” forthcoming in an edited volume from Cambridge Scholars Press.
Professional Activities:
Dr. Tebben's dissertation, "Wordy Women: Conversation and Power in the Age of Louis XIV" traces the rise and fall of the 17th century French salonnière and female author. She is also fluent in Italian, and has presented numerous conference papers on French and Italian literature of the 16th and 17th centuries. In this area, she has published “Writing the Inexpressible: Du Bellay’s Olive,” on French Renaissance poetry, in French Review, and “A Transgressive ‘Female’ Space: Moderata Fonte’s Il merito delle donne” on an Italian writer of the Renaissance in NEMLA Italian Studies, In addition, she has written on popular culture and presented a conference paper entitled "Sexuality and Disney Films, or Mickey's Freudian Slips." She published "Speaking of Women: Molière at the Court of Louis XIV," an article derived from her dissertation, in Modern Language Studies.
