David Reed Myers
Chemistry and Mathematics
Division: Natural Sciences & Mathematics
Year Appointed: 1989
Positions:
Before coming to Simon's Rock, Dr. Myers pursued a year of postdoctoral study at McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario, CANADA), and worked for Starks Associates (Private Custom Synthesis Company, Buffalo,NY). He is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Science Teachers Association
Education:
BS Chemistry/BA Mathematics, magna cum laude, Fairleigh Dickinson University.
MA Chemistry, Princeton University
Ph.D. Chemistry, Princeton University
Research Interests:
Reactive organic intermediates; strained organic molecules; and computer modeling of strained organic molecules and organic reactions involving reactive intermediates. He also has an interest in the antibacterial properties of indigenous fungi in Berkshire County. In addition, he has a strong interest in the improvement of education in chemistry and has served as a reader for the Advanced Placement (AP) Program.
Awards/Grants:
While a Graduate Student, Dr. Myers received a Garden State Graduate Fellowship for four years. For the last two summers, he has been a Reader for the Advancement Placement Exam in Chemistry, administered by Educational Testing Service. He has also attended workshops on: Microscale Organic Chemistry Laboratory (which he implemented for our Organic labs); Peer-Led Learning for Chemistry; Chemistry in Context (which resulted in a new course of the same name); and Industrial Organic and Pharmaceutical Chemistry and College Science Teaching.
