Meet the Faculty

I was an assistant professor and extension specialist for the newly created Environmental Studies program at Iowa State University in 1976. I saw an add in the journal Science for a position at "Simon's Rock Early College" (one of the five names this institution has had since I arrived) and responded. They were looking for someone in environmental studies and botany...I had just gotten my PhD in the latter. I think there were few applicants and I got the job. No one told me I was to teach a sample class, so in the middle of the interview when they told me, I was panicked. I remember speaking about environmental economics and I was lucky in that there were no economists in the room! The same day I received the Simon's Rock offer, I was offered a job with the Canadian government to work on the Athabasca tar sands in Alberta which has since become, partially, the Keystone pipeline proposed from Alberta to Texas.

I am pretty "laid back", enjoy a good laugh, don't like to lecture (but sometimes have to do so).
