Study the origins of social cognition.

This NSF funded internship will give undergraduate students the opportunity to gain research training across the fields of comparative and developmental psychology. Students will have the opportunity to study the origins of human social cognition from two different but related perspectives: developmental studies testing human children’s social understanding and comparative studies examining social cognition in capuchin monkeys. During the 10-week internship, students will work jointly in Dr. Laurie Santos’s Comparative Cognition Laboratory and Dr. Kristina Olson’s Social Cognitive Development Laboratory at Yale University. Summer interns will participate in all aspects of the research process: research design, data collection, coding, and statistical analysis. In addition, students will have the opportunity to work directly with child participants and a group a socially-housed capuchin monkeys. Students will also have the chance to participate in weekly lab meetings and take part in a professional development series. Application due March 1st, 2011.

Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities

the HACU National Internship Program - stipend and housing included. Application due in February.

Participants are undergraduate and graduate students, have a minimum 3.0 GPA and are active in community and campus activities.HACU reviews applications for completeness and eligibility. HACU staff matches academic backgrounds to internship descriptions provided by the host organizations. Representatives from the host organizations and HACU staff work to ensure that students’ skills and goals are considered in placement. Agencies and corporations review applications and make the final selection. Supervisors are encouraged to interview applicants before making the final student selection. Students who are selected, will be contacted by HACU and offered the position. Interns work in the Washington, D.C. area and at field sites throughout the country. It is not possible for applicants to select which agencies or corporations for whom they will intern. In the past, interns have enhanced their professional skills through placements in departments of public affairs, accounting, human resources and information technology, as well as laboratories, hospitals, airports, and national forests and parks, among others. Some intern assignments have included completing and analyzing research, writing speeches, conducting audits, performing land surveys, creating web pages, conducting community health surveys, and developing outreach strategies for under-served populations.

Summer 2010 Internships

The Institute will offer internships in three areas for summer 2010:

Research Internship. Interns will provide administrative and research support to researchers. Duties include: assisting with literature reviews and data collection; designing charts, graphs and tables; answering phones; and filing. Qualifications: Strong organizational skills, good interpersonal skills, interest in policy research and women’s issues; exp. with statistics, economics or social sciences through coursework. Research areas for the summer of 2010 include:

  • The quality of women’s jobs, including wages, access to health insurance, paid sick leave, and workplace flexibility.
  • The work and welfare experiences of low-income women at the state and national levels, including an ongoing study examining the policy needs of women in the Gulf Coast following Hurricane Katrina.
  • Increasing access to higher education and non-traditional jobs for low-income women.
  • Expanding access to income supports for women such as Unemployment Insurance and Family Leave.
  • Strategies for improving child care access, affordability, and quality.
  • Older women's economic issues, including social security and pensions.
  • Women’s civic activism and new strategies for engaging a diverse range of organizations in activism on women's issues.
  • The economic status of women and girls, women of color, and immigrant women across the United States.

Duties of an Intern

The Department is looking for students with a broad range of majors, such as Business or Public Administration, Social Work, Economics, Information Management, Journalism, and the Biological and Physical Sciences, as well as those majors more traditionally identified with international affairs.Intern duties and responsibilities may vary according to post or office of assignment. For instance, interns may write reports on human rights issues, assist with trade negotiations, assist with citizens services or visa work, help Americans in distress abroad, or organize conferences or visits of high-level officials. Others may research economic or environmental issues, write news stories, work on web pages or help produce electronic journals. Those interested in administrative management may use their expertise working on projects involving budgets, human resources, information systems, or general logistical support to posts abroad. Some may be involved in educational and cultural exchange activities.

Council on Foreign Relations.

The Council on Foreign Relations’ Internship Program offers outstanding opportunities for college and graduate students focusing on international relations who are considering a career in foreign policy or a related field. Interns are recruited year-round on a semester basis for both the New York and Washington, DC, offices. The fall and spring semesters require a minimum commitment of sixteen hours per week. The summer semester requires a full-time commitment. An intern’s duties generally consist of administrative work, program coordination, research, editing, and writing. The internships are unpaid but provide a small stipend upon successful completion to offset transportation expenses.

Multicultural Arts Management in NYC.

As this program seeks to promote diversity in the field of arts management, preference will be given to African-American, Asian-American, Latina/o, and Native-American students.

Each intern spends 10 weeks at a New York City arts organization, working full time Monday through Friday. In addition, interns attend site visits to all participating arts organizations; an opening orientation breakfast meeting; weekly social gatherings and/or workshops; and a closing ceremony and reception. Interns may complete projects in marketing and communications, development (fundraising), event planning, audience development, community outreach, and more. Participating students come from around the country, and they bring with them a variety of personal and academic backgrounds. Intern host arts organizations represent a range of disciplines, including music, dance, theater, visual arts, museums, and arts services. And last but not least, corporate mentors hold numerous professional occupations but share a common passion for the arts and desire to guide a young person in his/her pursuits.

Public Policy and International Affairs Summer Fellowship:

This is for juniors and applicants must be committed to completing a Master’s Degree in public and/or international affairs at one of the PPIA Consortium graduate schools.

Must demonstrate an interest in pursuing a professional career associated with public service such as government, nonprofits, humanitarian and international organizations and other related programs.

The PPIA Junior Summer Institutes (JSI) have been the hallmark of the PPIA Fellowship Program for over 20 years. JSI is an intensive seven-week summer program that focuses on preparing students for graduate programs in public and international affairs and careers as policy professionals, public administrators and other leadership roles in public service. The JSI curriculum includes economics, statistics, domestic/international policy issues and leadership topics, all designed to sharpen the students' quantitative, analytic and communication skills. Extracurricular activities are also included. These skills are vital for admission into the top graduate programs in public and international affairs. The successful completion of a summer institute is a requirement for PPIA Fellows.

Although the Urban Institute does not have a formal internship program, we do hire research assistants on a temporary basis for full-time and part-time assignments during the academic year and during the summer.

The position of UI Associate is responsible for assisting senior researchers in various policy areas such as housing, welfare, population studies, health, and education policy. Incumbents will conduct literature reviews, analyses and programming tasks, as well as participate in reporting research findings and presenting data.

Qualified candidates should be enrolled in a B.A. program in Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Sociology, Public Policy, Computer Science, or other social science field with strong quantitative and analytical skills, library and Internet research experience. Proficiency with spreadsheet and presentation graphics software skills, familiarity with data analysis software packages (such as SAS or SPSS), and experience with survey data analysis preferred. Many graduate-level opportunities also exist.
