Berkshire South Internships

Berkshire South Regional Community Center in Great Barrington, MA, seeks motivated students to complete a 20-hour (total) internship during Summer and/or Fall 2011. Interns will conduct a series of six 1.5-hour youth observations at local parks and BSRCC programs, recording interactions and taking special note of possible bullying behaviors. While interns will be asked to report suspicious or dangerous behaviors to site supervisors, they will not be requested (or permitted) to engage in disciplinary action themselves. (see details attached)

Based on their observations and training they receive in the course of the internship, interns will create a 30-minute youth-oriented presentation on bullying awareness, prevention, or intervention strategies. The experience will culminate in a final report comprised of a summary of observations, a list of recommendations to the program, and a personal reflection as to how skills learned in the internship will assist the student in a later career.

Students in the following majors will likely find this internship most useful:

  • Cross-Cultural Relations
  • Documentary Studies
  • Gender Studies (particularly regarding LGBTQ bullying issues)
  • Psychology
  • Social Action/Social Change

Scheduling for this internship is flexible and will be determined on a one-on-one basis with interested students. Summer internships will have the most flexible hours as our day-camps and park supervisions run most of the day; fall internships largely will be with before- and after-school programs. Interested students should apply by the following dates:

  • Summer: Friday, June 10, 2011
  • Fall: Friday, September 16, 2011

For more information or to register for the internship, contact Youth Intervention/Prevention Coordinator Mike Miller at (413) 528-2810 x30 or at mmiller@berkshiresouth.org.
