OED Online (Oxford English Dictionary)

Project Gutenberg
An organization dedicated to publishing free books online. Most of the material is from before 1923 (due to copyright considerations). "So you won't find the latest bestsellers or modern computer books here. You will find the classic books from the start of this century [i.e., the Twentieth] and previous centuries." Google Scholar
The ever-ambitious Google’s attempt to index “scholarly” information on the web. Not exhaustive or entirely reliable (the project is still in development), but worth a try if you’ve drawn a blank everywhere else. Note that many of the articles indexed require payment for viewing (though you can usually obtain the article citation for free). More database info.
